This week’s reading was about personal connections, new media, and communication. Yes, there are tons of negatives regarding media and communication but for this brief summary of Chapters 1-3 (Byam) I will focus on the positives.
In my opinion, communication is vital for intimate relationships to stay connected. Media such as mobile phones and the internet offer more opportunities for connection and can be highly successful routes for couples to stay connected, build stronger relationships and have fun! ”The purpose of communication technologies is to allow people to exchange messages without physically being present.” The mobility of media makes person to person communication possible regardless of location, one needs never to be out of touch with loved ones.
Some say that electronic msgs are cold - but they don’t have to be - they can be HOT! Affection and communication are top things women look for in men…and a good sense of humour. An “all day affair” then naturally turns into “honey, you keep my fires going through out the day and you’ll have to call the fire department tonight!” It’s so simple. So men, spark us throughout the day by sending a few complimentary, encouraging, fun and flirtatious texts or emails - and - um - the rest will speak for itself, shall we say. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon! Just thought I’d throw that in. :)
Okay, back to this week’s reading. Synchronous communication such as face-to-face conversations, phone calls, instant msgs and skype occur in real time and help people to feel more together when they are apart. Msgs are immediate, personal, and encourage playfulness in the interaction. Media is also viewed as an impoverishment due to reduced social cues, making telephone and internet less intimate and less suited to connections. I agree, face-to-face communication is always the best but when distance prevails, the internet and mobile phones can keep people connected and build warm loving relationships despite the geography. And thanks to emoticons - social cues have - to some degree - been put into digital communication. Emoticons build friendly communication, show others that we are approachable, interested, and can be quite entertaining.
And finally, a word of warning. Remember the Reach, Storage and Replicability of new media is highly consequential! Do NOT pull a Paris Hilton! What is personal may become mass and can lead to fame or disasster.
Paris Hilton on her sex tape:
P. HILTON: This is not what I planned. I didn’t want to be known as that, and now, when people look at me they think that I’m something I’m not just because of one incident one night with someone who I was in love with. People assume — oh, she’s a slut just because of one thing that happened to me and it’s hard because I’ll never — I’ll have to live with that for the rest of my life and explain it to my children. And it’s — it’s something that’s changed my life forever and I’ll never be able to erase it…
Paris Hilton you should STOP using digital media!
